Michele Derbich: Newcomers Welcome

Topic Description:

The Language Instruction For Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program at Lethbridge College has a huge variety of students from all over the world. Students with the LINC program are learning English for the workplace and some go on to learn English for Academic Purposes. These students can be our community neighbors, friends, employees and colleagues. Michelle’s presentation touches on language considerations to be aware of when hiring newcomers, resources for potential employers and the growth mindset that newcomers embrace – often making them excellent employees.

Speaker Bio:

Michelle Derbich comes from the North West of Ireland, grew up in the UK and became a Canadian in 2016. She is the Academic Coordinator for the Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program at Lethbridge College, a graduate student and busy mom. When Michelle’s not working or studying, she can be found trying in vain to be a ‘cool mom’ with her teenage kids, or glued to a documentary. She’s an active advocate for diversity and inclusion in Lethbridge, a certified trainer for the Mental Health Commission of Canada and a true proponent of it ‘taking a village’ – even a windy village, nestled on the prairie.;
